Sharon – On-site Manager

Team Spotlight

Sharon has been part of Team JET since 2007 and has been helping organisers with their front-of-house staff management and event registration ever since. Here’s a bit more about Sharon…

When did you join JET?

2007.

Where are you based?

Bradford, Yorkshire.

What’s your career history?

I have worked in events since 1990. I started out on registration working for one agency as well as having 5 part-time jobs in the retail, museum, bar/restaurants, nightclubs and model/promotions for a number of years, which worked well with the seasonal working patterns that are events.

As my experience grew, I became well known in the industry and other companies wanted to work with me and I helped a lot of staffing agencies that are still around to this day to find staff and train up teams all over the UK.

I worked for many of the agencies that started companies at the beginning of computer technology in the 90’s and worked my way up as a supervisor of staff. Eventually in 2007 I was put on a temporary contract with Show Data (which have now become JET), where I am still to this day.

What have been your impressions of the events industry?

I’ve had the privilege of seeing our industry evolve into what it is today and it always amazes me how far technology has progressed over the years and how it has moved events into the 21st Century, whether we like it or not. At the beginning of time… sorry the 1990’s… we used to hand write badges and there were over 80 typists on every show. It used to take us a week to set up an event… it now takes just a few hours!

If you were going to run an event, what would it be?

I’d love to do an information event for communities to help better understand people’s needs today with the ongoing health and poverty crisis in the UK. This is one of my passions and people need to be educated.

The song you’d sing at karaoke?

A bit rude but ‘My Humps’ by Black Eyed Peas always gets everyone up and dancing.

Worst job you’ve had (hopefully not this one 😉)?

When I was younger, I did a leaflet stuffing job where you sat for 8 hours popping inserts into newspapers, you had to do thousands for a really small wage. I think I lasted a day.

Favourite Film?

Hard one as I’m a film buff, any action films with a female lead. The first one I watched was Nikita (the French version), but I do love Die Hard at Christmas.

Favourite Food?

Bacon Sandwich (no comments please).

Favourite Drink?

Has to be a cuppa tea (I’m from Lancashire originally, it’s the law).

Favourite Holiday/Place to go on holiday?

Love holidaying in the UK, usually no more than 2 hours away. When you travel for your work it becomes less glamourous travelling, so I like to be near home. I love spa retreats and city breaks.

If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go?

New York, because my husband has always wanted to go and I’d like to go to Canada to see my auntie who I’ve not seen for 10 years.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Sleeping mostly and spending time with friends and family.

What one thing could you never give up?

Chocolate or husband (can’t decide).

Your biggest achievement?

As it’s work-related, setting up my own company and working in a male-dominated industry… and still here.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.

I can speak 14 languages (only kidding!). I started my career as a florist and trained for 3 years at Horticulture college and managed a flower shop when I was only 18 years old. (Bet you’re impressed?).
